Nestled demurely in the small town of Mananthavady is Pazhassi Raja’s Tomb. This attraction is considered one of the topmost places to visit in Wayanad as visitors can easily reach it on their tour to Mananthavady. The tomb is built in the town and one can reach it using auto. Many travel to the tomb walking. Most travelers make a short trip to this tomb as it sheds immense light on the local heritage and culture. People coming here can relax as the surroundings of the tomb are very pristine and tranquil. 

About Pazhassi Raja Memorial Wayanad Kerala

The tomb of this famous warrior is nestled 30 kilometers from Kalpetta and is built in the town of Mananthavady. The tomb is dedicated to honor the Lion of Kerala, aka, Veer Pazhassi Raja, a warrior belonging to the royal family of Kottayam. The memorial was built to commemorate the warrior’s’ bravado against the colonial British. ‘Lion of Kerala’ as he is called was killed by the British, and so a tomb of was built at the very site where he was cremated. The tomb offers great insight into the local heritage of the place and attracts loads of visitors. Many come here to enjoy the peaceful ambiance that is beautified with lush green valleys of Wayanad Kerala 

History

Known as Lion king, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja was a guerrilla warrior who fought against the British East India Company when it tried to dominate the region of Wayanad. His warfare against the British was supported by the tribesmen called Kurichias. It was in 1805 that Pazhassi Raja was killed in one of his combats against the British. The place where his body was cremated is known as the tomb. It is one of the major attractions in Wayanad tour packages.

The monument of Pazhassi Raja is built in the very same spot where his body was cremated. The tomb is a very popular attraction in Wayanad and houses a museum that is built underground. It was constructed by Eugene Pandala, a famous architect and the man behind the design of  Banasura Sagar Dam. The whole monument is made of mud and looks very stylish. The museum houses an exhibit, the most striking of which is the Raja’s sword.

Pazhassi Tomb opening hours

Visitors to this tomb can come from 9 AM till 1 PM. It opens again at 2 PM and closes at 4.30 PM.
