About Wayanad Heritage Museum

Regarded as a prominent attraction of Wayanad Tourism, the museum is also called Ambalavayal Museum. The famous Sulthan Bathery is located only 11 kilometers from here, while the Edakkal Caves are at a distance of 5 kilometers. From ancient tribal hunting weapons, jewelry, local art to terracotta, the museum is a treasure trove of primitive culture and heritage. It is Kerala’s one of the best heritage museums. There are four sections in which the artifacts are housed-Devasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Veerasmruthi, and Jeevenasmruthi. 

History

The museum came into existence with collaborative efforts from college students of Calicut University, the local people, anthropologists and district authorities. Many excavations were carried out in which rare artifacts were discovered. Excavations were carried out in Edakkal Caves, Sulthan Bathery and village of Ambalavayal. Relics were excavated from other places like Edathara and Muthanga. The main aim of establishing this heritage museum was to preserve the primitive culture of India.

One of the most popular Places to visit in Wayanad, this museum is a treasure house to explore relics. One of the most striking features to be seen here is the pictorial rock edicts. These have been named Hero Stones as these depict the olden and glorious era of the warriors of the region. Apart from these edicts, visitors will be left awestruck by Urvara, the figurine of Goddess of Fertility. There are two levels that have divided the museum. On the first level, one can see tribal artifacts, while on the second level, statues are displayed. Another noteworthy aspect of the museum is its Kerala styled architecture that looks striking to the eyes.
