One of the top places to visit in Pondicherry is the French War Memorial, which has a great historical significance. The building is also known as Monument aux combattants des Indes françaises morts pour la patrie on French, and it is located on the Goubert Avenue. When the First World War was going on, a huge number of fearless soldiers fought with their lives and became martyred. This building was solely built to act as a reminder for those soldiers.

The French War Memorial was constructed in the year 1937, and got its inauguration ceremony done on 3rd April, 1938. The Governor at that time was Crocicchia. Just behind the building, there is a bas-relief present which is made of bronze. This structure is also an important part of history as it was created to mark Dupleix’s arrival in the year 1742, when he arrived at Pondicherry.
In the year 1970, the French War Memorial underwent major reconstruction, and many new parts were constructed at that time. In any Pondicherry tour package, the French War Memorial is one of the most important places to be covered.

The best celebration or event hosted on the French War Memorial is the Bastille Day, which is held on the 14th of July every year. On this day, the brave warriors are paid tribute and homage. The entire memorial is illuminated very beautifully to commemorate the special day.
