He secretly started the sculptures and installations in a canyon near Sukhna Lake in the year 1957. This was an artistically inclined young man driven by the beauty of trash.

NEK Chand used to mould his figures at night and over weekends for over ten years, but the work went on absolutely unobserved. Little by little, cleared stones with curves of paths, streams, and amphitheatres characterized the creation. Over a thousand figures, predominantly with older materials, were set up. Typically, his art showed people alongside animals-even getting into them as well as abstract stuff. It was a very strong connection to both nature and social life.
