Udupi Overview

Marvelous and enchanting, Udupi is considered to be the famous pilgrimage destination in South India. The place is situated at a distance of around 403 km for the popular city of Bangalore, 147 km for Shimoga, 65 km from Mangalore and around 309 km from the historically enriched place of Mysore. places to visit in Udupi has a lot many in the list.
 
Udupi is a popular destination where the famous temple resides. It has its headquarters at the Udupi district. The most talked-about cuisine is Udupi cuisine loved by people across the globe. It is surrounded by the Western Ghats on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. Udupi is popularly known by the names called Rajata Peetha and Shivalli by the localites.

Glancing in the historical importance of the place, the name of the city is originated from the word Odipu. As per the localites there were 27 stars in the Hindu Astrology which was married to Moon and then after this loses its lustre. Since the Lord Shiva, is the last resort for everything, Moon and Stars simply created a Lingam and started offering timely poojas. 

The word "Udu" means Lord and "Pa" means Stars in the ancient language Sanskrit.  This place is a part of the Tulu Nadu. Thus, Tulu is supposedly the main language spoken here.

Udupi Sri Krishna temple
          
Udupi is a location where the religious fanatics will find solace. The architectural buildings of the gods and saints are largely decorative structures where the majestic statues or idols are observed. The famous Udupi Sri Krishna math is 13th century old. It was established by the great philosopher of that time, Madhavacharya.

The temple is the center for learning the Dvaita Philosophy. It is a pilgrimage place where people across the globe keep on attending from time to time. The most alluring idol of Lord Krishna inside the temple is majestic in outlook. It is richly decorated with costly jewels.

The famous saints of devotees of Lord Krishna, of all time Kanakadasa, Chaitanya, and Purandaradasa once visited this temple to have a secluded darshan of this idol.
 
Another most talked about feature of this temple is the Kanakana Kindi. It is basically a small window from where Lord Krishna uses to see his devotees of Kanakadasa. This is a very auspicious temple and the beliefs are extremely high among the localities and the devotees across the globe.
 
There is another beautiful temple dedicated to the ultimate lord of all, Shiva.  It is more than 100 years old and is situated near Yellur. The city has an additional Hindu monastery named Tulu Ashta Mathas which was established by the saint Sri Madhavacharya. There are 8 monasteries in all.

Festivals at Udupi

The popular festival of Udupi includes the Paryaya festival which held in every alternate year. organized to attract large number of devotees to enjoy the festival. The chariots observed the processions and the large group of people perform cultural shows.

The festivals like Krishna Janmastami, Holi, Ramanavami, Dusshera, Rathasaptami and even diwali, celebrated with lot of joy and enthusiasm.

The best time to visit places to visit in Udupi is around October to March and even November to February is crowded. It will take you 2 complete days to travel all the places in Udupi.
