History of Badami

Badami is an ancient town of Karnataka state and belongs to the Palaeolithic to Mesolithic periods. The city has many Red sandstone Hills, famous as “Badami cists”. During the Chanakya dynasty, Monarch Pulikeshi-I established an independent Kingdom, and the town was its first capital. There were four Rock cut caves and three structural temples under the Chanakya ruler; it was also a hub for religious and political activities.

Pulikeshi-II defeated the king of Kanchipuram in South India and enlarged his campaign. He captured the whole area up to the Narmada River. His brother Vishnuvardhana now became the governor of the Eastern territory. Eastern territory became the Vengi of Chalukyas.

Later, King Narasimhavarma-I From Tamilnadu catched Badami. It led to the revival of art and architecture during the Pallava dynasty. Chalukyas again got the city back in 1655 AD and revived art and architecture. However, the Rashtrakuta dynasty conquered the area in 757 AD, and the Chalukyas continued to rule in various empire regions.
