The Kumarakom bird sanctuary is in the village of Kumarakom, 16 kilometers from Kottayam. The Bird Century is a perfect spot for nature and bird lovers. The area is spread over 14 acres along the Vembanad lake's shore, offering a glimpse of Kerala's natural beauty. People should look for a spot away from the city and some hours in peace can definitely relax here.  It is one of the must-see places to visit in Kumarakom.

The most well-liked method of seeing the bird population of the sanctuary is to take a houseboat or motorboat excursion at Kumarakom. It becomes feasible to observe a variety of birds when on the houseboats and motorboats without actually disturbing them. The tranquility felt when sailing over the Vembanad Lake's serene waters adds to the uniqueness of these cruises. The boats can also easily visit the Island of Pathiramanal, commonly known as the "sands of night," which draws a lot of migratory birds. According to legend, the island was created when a Brahmin entered the ocean to do his evening bath. The land then rose from underneath.

In Vembanad lake in Kottayam, many migratory birds gather here and is also home for many of them. Tourists can find birds here from the region of Siberia and Himalayas.

It is encouraging for park visitors to observe so many different bird species in one location. The Siberian Cranes are among the migratory species in the sanctuary that are most well-known.

The best time to visit

June through August are the ideal months to opt for the Kumarakom tour package. But if migratory birds are a top priority during a visit, November to March is ideal. The migratory birds arrive in great numbers around this time and stay in the park for a while. The mangrove woods, lush paddy fields, and coconut groves that make up the environment of the Kumarakom bird sanctuary are abundant. Lilies that are in bloom make the park more attractive and draw many people there.
