One of the most important and well-known sites in Pune, Maharashtra. The Sarasbaug Ganpati Temple honours Lord Ganesha. In 1784, Shrimant Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa constructed this revered temple.
Its history goes back to 1750. That was when Shrimant Nana Saheb Peshwa ordered the construction of a lake at the base of the Parvati Hills. The temple is now one of the most important places to visit in Pune.
Shrimant Nana Saheb Peshwa left an area of 250,000 square feet as an island in the middle of the lake to turn it into a garden. After completing it, he called the place "Sarasbaug." Before Shrimant Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa built the Ganesha Temple, this was the yard where it stood. In honour of this, the temple is called the Sarasbaug Ganpati Temple.
Sarasbaug Ganpati Temple Historical Background
Shrimant Nana Saheb Peshwa built the Devdeveshwar Temple during the 18th century, marking an important contribution to Pune’s spiritual heritage. It is on the top of the Parvati Hills. After that, he wanted to enhance the beauty of the area around the hills that he had developed.
Balaji Baji Rao is also famous as Shrimant Nana Saheb Peshwa in the state. He served as the 8th Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. He was the leader of the government. He paid for the building of a lake near the base of the Parvati Hills so that people could go boating there.
In 1750, work began to dig for the lake. They preserved a 250,000-square-foot island in the middle of the lake. Later, they transformed it into a peaceful park surrounded by nature. Shrimant Nana Saheb Peshwa gave the park the name "Sarasbaug". There were 12 Peshwas in the Maratha Empire. The last one was Shrimant Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa. In 1784, he built a small temple to Lord Ganesha in the middle of the island.
In 1861, the Pune Municipal Corporation took over the management of Sarasbaug Island. However, they struggled to keep the lake clean, which led to the growth of mosquitoes. A long time ago, they chose to fill up a big part of the lake with old things. After some time, they turned that area into a garden and made a moat, a clean, stone-lined waterway around the temple.
The first statue of Lord Ganesha in the temple was made from kurund stone. It was changed in 1882, and in 1990. A new white marble idol was put in the center. By 1995, they had built a small museum on the temple grounds to show off different ways Lord Ganesha looks.

There used to be only one way into the temple, but now there are three.
Renovation work was done on the temple in 1969, the same year that it was built. The opening of this new building took place in 1977. The hall in front of the sanctum was made longer, and two more halls were added on either side.
Once there was a lake around the temple, but now there is a paved wall around it. You can see fish, turtles, and beautiful lotus flowers in the lake.
