The early history of Varkala, also referred to as the Southern Varanasi, is surrounded by a variety of intriguing stories.

In order to atone for his wrongdoings, King Pandyan built the famous Janardhan Swami temple nearby, as instructed by Lord Brahma 2000 years ago. Another legend describes a group of pilgrims who enlisted Lord Narada's assistance in atoning for their transgressions. The Lord's valkalam, or loincloth, which washed up on the coast, gave the town its name. The need that pilgrims make prayers at this location gave rise to the custom of papanasam, or atoning for sins by taking a bath in the sea's holy waters.
