History
After the Travancore king Udaya Marthanda Varma, who made a substantial contribution to the development of this little coastal town in the 16th century, Varkala was once known as Udaya Marthandapuram. In order to atone for his wrongdoings, King Pandyan built the famous Janardhan Swami temple nearby, as instructed by Lord Brahma 2000 years ago.
