Kilimanoor Palace

History of Kilimanoor Palace

Raja Ravi Varma, a well-known Indian painter, and Raghava Varma, King Marthanda Varma's father, were both born in Kilimanoor Palace. The palace is around to be 300 years old or so. A Pillai chieftain previously controlled Kilimanoor, but Maharaja Marthanda Varma gave it to Travancore. An army from Kilimanoor fought the invasion of Venad by an allied force in 1740. The Dutchman, Captain Hockert, led it and eventually beat them. 

It was the first time an Indian army had conquered a European force, despite it being a modest triumph. In honor of this accomplishment, Marthanda Varma awarded tax exemptions and autonomous status to the regions under the administration of the Kilimanoor Palace in 1753. Together with the Ayyappa temple, the current palace complex was constructed at this time.
