The Kondaveedu Fort is an old hill fortress in the village of Kondaveedu in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. It is a historical fort in Andhra Pradesh and a popular tourist place in Amaravati.

What is the history of the Kondaveedu fort?

The Kondaveedu Fort was built by the Telugu Chodas and strengthened by the Kakatiyas. It was later occupied by Prolaya Vema Reddy, who moved his city from Addanki to Kondaveedu in 1323 AD. The Gajpathis of Orissa then took over the fort, and in 1458, the Bahmani Sultans destroyed it. In 1516, Krishnadevaraya, ruler of Vijayanagara, took it over.

The Golconda Sultans fought over the fort thrice in 1531, 1536, and 1579. In 1579, Sultan Quli Qutb Shah finally took it over and changed its name to Murtuzanagar. Later, in 1687, the Mughal army led by Aurangzeb took it back. In 1752, the French colonists took control of the fort and made many improvements to strengthen it. After that, English imperialists took over the fort in 1788 but abandoned it early in the 1800s in favour of Guntur.

How high is Kondaveedu Fort from sea level?

After the fall of Vijayanagar, the Qutub Shahis took control of the fort, followed by the Mughals and then the Asaf Jahis. Eventually, the British captured the fort in 1788. They built the fort on a group of hills that rise about 1500 feet above sea level. At its highest point, the elevation is 1700 feet above sea level.

Inside the fort, there are churches and halls with columns that draw a lot of tourists. Some of the most popular places to visit are the Trikoteswara Swamy Temple, the Gopinatha Temple, and the Kathulabave.

Inside the fort, there is also a mosque that is believed to have been constructed from the ruins of a temple.

At Kondaveedu Fort, archaeologists discovered the ruins of a Buddhist stupa beneath a dilapidated Hindu temple at the beginning of 2019. The relics come from the late Satavahana time between the 1st and 2nd century CE. The view from here is breathtaking since the fort is on top of a hill.

The best time to visit

While October, November, December, January, and February are the best months to visit Amravati because the weather is pleasant all day, an Amaravati tour package can also include the other months. One can also plan a vacation for June, July, August, or September to enjoy cool nights and heavy rain.
