History

This place's name comes from where the weapon that killed Daksha fell during a Yagna. It was famous as Pattachalkshetra, but now it's popular as Pattiseema. The Skanda Purana says that Veerabhadra Swamy was told to settle on a nearby hill as a self-manifested Shiva Linga. 

He then cleaned his prayer beads in the Godavari River. Because of this, the place is also popular as Pattisam or Pattisachala Kshetram. The temple is said to have been built by Vishwakarma in mythology, but it is more likely that the Reddy kings did it in history.
