There is a belief that Daksh Prajapati, father of Sati ( wife of Lord Shiva) once organized a Yagna and didn’t invite Lord Shiva. Sati was not able to bear the insult of her husband and jump into the fire of the Yagna. Shiva started his tandavanritya by holding the dead body of his wife on his back.

To restrain lord Shiva from this activity Lord Vishnu used the Sudarshan chakra and cut off the corpse of Sati into 51 pieces and a piece of her skull had fallen in the Kunalpathri temple indeed.
