Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling Monastery or just Nechung Monastery is one of the historical places to visit in Dharmashala. It is one of the very popular and famous centre of attractions of McLeodGanj for tourists. This monastery is a religious community that comes under the Tsuglagkhang Complex.

The history of the Nechung Monastery dates back to centuries. The monastery considered as the defender divinity of His Highness Dalai Lama and the Tibetans and acts as the seat of State Oracle. It is one of the most religious and holy places for the Buddhist community indeed. The monks of the Nechung perform various religious ceremonies generally for all the living beings but especially for his highness, the Dalai Lama. 

Importance of Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling Monastery

Nechung Monastery has a great significance with Tibetian history, Culture, and Buddhist Religion. The original Monastery was located in Lhasa. It had a total number of 115 Monks during 1959. During the revolution, the monastery was razed and was placed where it is currently situated. Six monks somehow managed to escape to India. They later continued their tradition at Nechung Institute.

A small piece of land had granted to the Nechung Monastery by the Tibetian government who was in exile. Important and useful buildings such as Monks residence, Temple, school, and a library built upon this piece of land and so on. The construction work commenced in 1977. And it finally got completed in the year 1984.

The Buddhists from all over the Dharamshala visit this place. Drepung monastery is nearby to Nechung Monastery. It’s just 10 minutes’ walk away. Nechung monastery is a strange place. That has also associated with exorcism, possession, and other pre-Buddhist rites. There is multiple proof the building itself. The door had painted blood red with the human scene. The various scenes of torchers can be seen at the roof of the building and other courtyards.
