Dagshai is very popular and one of Solan District’s oldest cantonment towns. The location is at a hillock.  Dagshai is situated at a height of 1,734 meters from the sea level. It had founded by the East India Company in the year, 1847. The East India Company took a total of 5 villages which had secured free of cost by Bhupinder Singh, the then Maharaja of Patiyala.

Dagshai is a small town with no hotels, however, there are several picnic spots which have some amazing views. From some of the picnic spots, the lightings from Chandigarh can be seen, which is just 65 Km away. There are two schools, Army Public School, Dagshai and the Dagshai Public school in this place, which occupies more than half of the town.

The Dagshai Central Jail is one of the attractions of Dagshai. It also has the prison where the mutiny of the Irish soldiers was imprisoned during 1920. The cantonment area of Dagshai has a lot of British styled buildings. Along with the Jail, the church is also the central attraction for the visitors. It is one of the attractive places to visit in Kasauli.

Dagshai Jail Museum

Dagshai Jail Museum was a British Prison and it is now turned into a museum. This Jail Museum is simply amazing and unique in India indeed. Mahatma Gandhi was in this jail for one whole year to give moral support to the Irish people.

The construction of the Jail with a maximum of 54 cells started in 1849. The cells are dark with not a single source of light. There is one VIP cell in the Dagshai Jail where there are some luxuries such as washrooms and a fireplace.

James Daly, the leader of the mutiny was on 2nd November 1920. It was a shot dead in the courtyard of the jail by the firing squad. And had buried in the Dagshai cemetery itself. After some years. his rests were backed to their dedicated place, Ireland. And also, he was given a funeral with military honor.
