An ancient town enriched with history and antiques, enhances the beauty of Banavasi. It is situated at a distance of around 23 kilometers from Sirsi and 50 kilometers from the most popular Jog falls. Banavasi, known by the name of Konkanapura is a Shrine at the Uttar Kannada, Karnataka
 
Banavasi lies at the Malnad area of the Western Ghats which is located at the banks of the river Varadha. It is one of the oldest towns in the state of Karnataka. The name Banavasi is taken from Bana meaning forest and Vasi meaning spring respectively. 
 
The place Banavasi was once the capital of the great ruler of the Kadamba, a well-known dynasty of the state of Karnataka.  It was even ruled by the Hyder Ali and even the Greatest Tipu Sultan; later, conquered by the British, till the time of the independence was gained. It is one of the must visit places in Jog falls.
 
Banavasi Madhukeshwara temple 

The gorgeous Banavasi Madhukeshwara temple is one of the top attractions of this place. Devotees have visited the place from time to time. It is oldest thus, have significant importance.  The chief deity worshipped here is Lord Shiva, a honey-coloured Shiva Lingam is found. This is the reason the name of the temple is Madhukeshwara. 
 
The temple is well decorated but with nominal structuring using various sculptures. It is completely made in granite rock. There is a grand Sankalpa mandapa added to the temple where the Chalukyan rule was actively mentioned in the pages of history. 

A well known Triloka Mandapa was created during the reign of the Hoysala rulers.  It is made using pillars and walls with exquisite cravings. A fantastic Nandi statue is present at the temple. 
 
Festivals at Banavasi 
 
The festivals at Banavasi are organized by the State government.  It is named as Kadambotsava.  Every year, around December, it is observed where folk dance, arts, demonstrations, Yakshagana Dramas and classical music is performed in the best way. Handcrafted Banavasi masks are used while performing the drama.
 
Festivals like Lakshadeepotsava,  Maha- Shivaratri and Navaratri is celebrated in a grand way. Make sure to incorporate this spot into your Jog falls Tour Packages.
