The old fortress of Daulatabad Fort stands tall and proud in the middle of a beautiful forest. People believe that this amazing building was constructed in the 12th century and often call it one of the "seven wonders of Maharashtra."
The most beautiful thing about this place, which is also famous as Devgiri Fort, is probably its position. From the top, visitors can see the whole city. There are about 750 steps that lead to the top, but the view from there is amazing, making it one of the must-see places to visit in Aurangabad.
Daulatabad Fort History
The Yadava lord, Raja Bhillamraj Yadav, built Daulatabad (once called "Devgiri") in 1187. The Tughlaq dynasty captured the fort, considered one of the best-preserved in India, in 1327.
The kings of Daulatabad renamed the town Daulatabad in 1328. In 1328, the sultanate of Delhi took over Daulatabad and made it the capital of the Tughlaq dynasty. However, the lack of water supply forced people to abandon the city, and the Tughlaq dynasty shifted its capital back to Delhi within two years.
Architecture
Towering above the city, Daulatabad Fort is one of India's historic forts located on top of a conical hill with a surrounding moat once filled with crocs and numerous bastions. The Tughlaq dynasty reinforced the fort with cannons. They also had the 30 meter tall Chand Minar.
The designers constructed the fort to discourage enemy marching, having a single doorway as both the entry and exit points. To prevent elephants from breaking open the gates, spikes were strategically placed on them. The fort's distinctive construction encloses any enemy attempting to enter the grounds.
Trek to the Daulatabad Fort
Climbing to the top of the huge Daulatabad Fort is one of the hardest things for visitors, and you can only do it on foot. It could take you anywhere from one to three hours to walk up the 750 stairs. It's easy to moderately hard, and there be some dark spots along the way that you'll need to bring a flashlight. This adventurous climb is often included in Aurangabad tour packages for history and thrill lovers.
Interesting Facts and Myths
One interesting thing about Daulatabad Fort is that none of the openings are in front of each other. It is something you'll get to enjoy as you stroll through the fort. The view from the top makes all of the work and time worthwhile. It shows how smart people were in the middle Ages when they built things like this.
