Auroville is also known as the “City of Dawn”, and it is a major part of Pondicherry tourism. The place is an experimental setup that strives to build a place where people from all communities and nationalities can stay together. In any Pondicherry tour package, the universal town, or Auroville is always present.
The inauguration of this township was done on February 28th, 1968. The place has land that has been deposited by numerous people, including people from all Indian states, and from 124 other countries.
At present, Auroville contains residents from over 195 nationalities, and the population is around 2800. These people call themselves as Aurovilleans. The city is recognized by UNESCO, and the natural scenery of the place attracts lots of outside visitors.
Auroville Meaning
Mirra Alfassa or the Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram came up with the vision of this city. Hence, the name was given as Auroville, meaning perfect harmony in all directions.
Auroville Architecture
The township has been planned as a circle with 1.25 km as radius. The Matrimandir is located at the exact center of the city. Among the other places to visit in Pondicherry, the peace zone, cultural zone, residential zone, and the industrial zone of Auroville are great options. A green belt surrounds the city, and it acts as a habitat for wildlife. The township has been established in a wasteland, which is a great achievement in itself.
Attractions
The Matrimandir is the main attraction, and a lot of tourists visit to witness it. The place provides just the right ambiance to meditate or concentrate. The Mandir has been made very skillfully, with the foundation urn shaped like a lotus, and the globe standing over 30 m high. The gate for entry is about 12 minutes walking distance from the center.
