Botanical Garden of Pondicherry is one of the main parts of Pondicherry Tourism, and numerous tourists come to visit this spot throughout the year. Botanical Garden is not only a tourist spot, but it is also a spot for imparting recreation and education. The gate of the place stands out with its surroundings, as it is a massive structure with ample signs of French architecture. Even the garden was created as per French style, in the year 1826.

History

French colonists mainly started this garden as an experiment to grow crops and plants in that region properly. With time, multiple trees and plant species were found to thrive here. As a result, the Botanical Garden was opened in 1831 by Perrottet. The French colony retreated from Pondicherry in 1960, after which the spot was nurtured to make it one of the best places to visit in Pondicherry, and the whole of South India.

Description

The main attraction of this place is the magnificent flower beds, paths lined with gravel, exotic fountains, and pruned trees. The multiple plant species available in the garden were mainly introduced by the French. At present, there are over 1500 plant species housed over a 22 acres area. Useful information regarding the plants is also provided in placards.

The Botanical Garden is mainly divided into 28 plots, with each plot carrying some rare and endangered plant species.

Pondicherry Botanical Garden Flower Show

The Botanical Garden flower show in Pondicherry takes place every year, and is also known as the Farmers Festival. The event displays an excellent presentation of the rare and beautiful flower species for the visitors to witness.

Pondicherry Botanical Garden Entry Fees

There is an entry fee of Rs.20 per head for adults. Children below 12 years of age do not require any fee.
