Varadaraja Perumal temple is in the southern territory of Pondicherry. The Hindu temple is built in dedication to Lord Vishnu. Varadaraja Perumal temple emphasizes on the Chola architecture. The construction of this Hindu temple is based on the Dravidian style of architecture. It is believed that the temple was built during the 11th century by the Cholas. 

The temple enclosed by a granite wall. It has a five-tiered rajagopuram at the temple’s gateway tower. Lord Vishnu is worshipped in the temple by the Vaikasana Agama tradition of worship. Daily four rituals are followed. Three big festivals are held in a year. During the French reign, most of the old temples were demolished but the ancient Varadaraja Perumal temple was spared for its divinity and aura. Thus, tourists always add this temple to their Pondicherry tour package.

The magnificent temple is located in the heritage town of the city by the Mahatma Gandhi road. It falls under the South Indian Territory of Pondicherry.

Varadaraja Perumal temple can be traveled at any time of the year. It is advised that if you are on Pondicherry tourism then July to September and October to February are the best months to travel. The cool weather will make your journey less tiresome.

Pushkarani a holy spring with 83 spring holes is present inside the temple. There are 12 wells within the temple. It is said by the scientists that the water here is green and supposed to have acidic compounds in it. It is believed that a holy bath in this water can cure fever, headache, and many other health issues. 

There are idols of many god and goddesses inside the temple such as Lord Rama, Lord Lakshman, Goddess Sita, Lord Hanuman, Sri Venugopala and Sri SanthanaGopala. Inscriptions on the walls of the temples reveal many stories behind the built of the temple by the Cholas and Pandavas. This is the best place for temple explorers and old monument lovers.

The temple opens early in the morning at 7 o clock. It remains open till 12 noon. After a gap of 4 hours, the temple reopens at 3:30 PM and closes at 8:00 PM.
