Grand Anicut is a very old dam located in Tamil Nadu. Earlier, this dam was used for different types of activities like diverting water, irrigation, and a lot more. It is estimated that the age of the dam will be around 2000 years old. 

Grand Anicut is constructed with the help of rocks, concrete and other standard construction materials. 

Grand Anicut History

It is estimated that the dam was constructed during the rule of Chols's dynasty. Earlier, during that time, the dam was used to divert water for different types of irrigation work. From that time, different types of upgrading in the construction of the dam was done. 

During the 20th century, the dam was used in the irrigation of 1 million acres of land.

Grand Anicut is 329 meters long. The width of the Grand Anicut is 20 meters. During British rule, various types of upgradation happened in the dam like curved shaped masonry.  All these features helped in a better sedimentary process. King Karikalan led to the establishment of Grand Anicut. During that time, the dam was constructed only by cutting rocks. 

The base of the dam is made up of sand. Along with this, heavier rock is put first and after that small rock is present. One of the best features about the dam is the sluice gate. These gates help in controlling the downstream water. So, with the help of this feature controlled water release can be done. 

Grand Anicut canal 

The total length of the Grand Anicut canal is 148 km. This canal passes through different places. Not only this, but it has 327 branches. All these branches total length comes to 1232 kms.
