History of the Sri Thirunedungalanathar Temple

It is believed that the temple was constructed during the rule of Chola's. The Chola's rule was between the 19th century and the 13th century. The Chola’s were involved in architecture, art, and music, so they contributed a lot towards developing temples and other monuments. 

It is believed that King Kulothunga Chola III built the temple. One day he had a dream of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva himself came in front of him and instructed him to build the temple. 

After the Chola’s rule, various dynasties came to this place. All of them contributed to the reconstruction and redevelopment of the temple. 

Architecture of the temple

Very beautiful patterns and carvings are present inside the temple. The main shrine of the temple is located in the middle of the temple. There is a secret tank also in the temple. It is believed that if any devotee is having a dip in the tank, it can help him or her in curing all the diseases. 

Various tower-like structures called Gopuram are present inside the temple. All the Gopurams have very detailed carvings and designs. Along with the main shrines, various other shrines are also present inside the temple.
