Kavala Caves are situated within a distance of 24 kilometers from Dandeli and known as one of the best places to visit in Dandeli. These natural caves are located at the core of the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, is one of the popular Dandeli places to visit. The Kavala Caves were made by volcanic activity before many ages, and these appear in the dense forest of Dandeli Sanctuary.

Presently, the caves of Kavala are inhabited by a lot of bats and snakes. The Kavala Caves are also reckoned as Sidda or Limestone Caves. At the entrance of the cave, there is a temple also. To get a glimpse of naturally formed Shivalinga, one has to crawl down 40 feet through the narrow tunnels. The height of this Shivalinga is about 4 feet, and the diameter is around 3 to 4 feet. The texture of this Shivalinga appears like nuts that are called Kavala in the Kannada language. Hence, this place is reckoned as Kavala Caves. Visitors may have to carry a torch or candle as the entrance passage is dark and narrow. Only during Shivaratri, the bulbs are lit when thousands of devotees gather there. Mainly for this temple, Kavala Caves are a great attraction for tourists in Dandeli tourism.
Kavala Cave trekking
Trekking is an excellent attraction of DANDELI TRIP, including the Kavala Caves. The Dandeli Forest Department usually organizes this trekking every day at sharp 6 AM. You have to trek about 3 to 4 kilometers along with 540 steps to reach the Kavala Caves. Besides the caves, you also will see the flowing river, Kali. The best time to head Kavala Caves is from October to February.
