Hemavathi Dam

Hemavathi Dam is popular enough among the Sakleshpur tourist places. This earthen dam is located at a distance of 27 kilometres from Hassan district in Karnataka. It is also known as Gorur Dam. Hemavathi Dam was constructed across the river Hemavathy, which is an important affluent of the river Kaveri. This dam is situated in Gorur, which is near the city of Hassan in Karnataka. The Hemavathi dam was constructed for serving multiple purposes as to provide drinking water supply and for irrigation purpose in the nearby villages. This vast reservoir covers a catchment area of 2,810 square kilometres. The length of this dam is 4,692 meters, and the height is 58.5 meters. There are six massive radial spillway gates in the Hemavathi Dam.

There are two temples near the dam named Sri Yoganarashimha and Sri Paravasudeva. These two temples are famous as a tourist destination. Besides the temples, tourists also can visit Shettihalli Church, that is located nearby of the dam and was constructed 450 years ago. Between October and March, is the best time for visiting Hemavathi Dam. Hemavathi Dam provides an excellent view to the visitors and a mandatory place among Sakleshpur places to visit. This view gets more attractive when the dam authority opens the gate, and the water flows down appealingly.
