Sholayar Dam is a masonry-gravity dam located on the Valparai-Athirapally road, 23 km from Valparai and 55 km from Athirapally. It is a popular tourist destination beside Athirapally Waterfall and one of the locations that every Athirapally Waterfalls tour package must include.

More precisely, the lower Dam is located more than 60 miles from Chalakudy town at Sholayar Dam. Because the Dam contains two reservoirs, there is a discrepancy between the upper and lower. Tourists can reach the Lower Dam, which is located in Kerala, but not the Upper Sholayar Dam, which is in Tamil Nadu. This landmark serves as the community's lifeline surrounds itself by the Sholayar forest.

While exploring places to visit near Athirapally Waterfalls, Sholayar Dam should definitely be considered. For those who love the outdoors, Sholayar is a destination paradise. Every week, tourists head to the Sholayar Dam grounds to relax in the calming influence of nature and get away from the bustle of distant cities. The Upper dam and the Lower dam, the latter of which is located far out in the wild, are the two reservoirs that are waiting for them. Only with prior authorization from the forest authority is it accessible.

About Sholayar Dam

The Solaiyar Dam is a component of the Sholayar Hydroelectric Project (HEP), which also includes the Solaiyar Flanking and Solaiyar Saddle Dams in addition to the main Solaiyar Dam. In 1965, the Dam was formally inaugurated. Construction on the Solaiyar Flanking and Saddle Dams began in 1964 and 1965, respectively.

The Parambikulam-Aliyar Project uses the Dam as a significant reservoir. The main Dam measures 66 meters in height, 430 meters in breadth, and 430.60 meters in length. The saddle dam allows the reservoir's excess waters to enter the Parambikulam Reservoir. The area around the Dam is incredibly beautiful in the natural world.

Other activities

Since it's in the middle of a forest, you may observe the flora and fauna while being outside. The Dam is the ideal location if you are a passionate nature photographer. While visiting the Dam, you can also visit the Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary and the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve.

The best time to visit

Although you may visit the place all year round, the best time to go is in the dry winter months. The ideal time to visit Sholayar Dam is from December to February.
