The Gaumukh Reservoir is a beautiful water body that surrounds the famous Chittorgarh Fort and is located on the far western side of the Fort. This reservoir is considered as one of the sacred Hindu. A complete Hindu pilgrimage tour is considered incomplete, if one does not visit this particular reservoir. The beauty of the reservoir however attracts tourists from all parts of the country and of the world and thus should definitely be on your list of places to visit Chittorgarh. The Chittorgarh Fort is also famously alluded to as the ‘water Fort’, as almost about forty percent of the Fort is covered by different water bodies like ponds (talaabs), wells, step wells (baories) and this also the huge Gaumukh Reservoir. There were originally eighty-four water bodies that were built within the Fort area of 700 hectares. Out of those, only twenty-two water bodies survive to this day.

Facts about the Gaumukh Reservoir:

The Gaumukh Reservoir is called so, because the origin of the reservoir is a perennial cascade shaped like the mouth of a cow. Hence, the reservoir came to be known as the ‘Gaumukh’ or the cow’s mouth reservoir.

The balcony on the eastern part of the beautiful Ratan Singh Palace overlooks the scenic beauty of the beautiful Gaumukh Reservoir. The Ratan Singh Palace was built by Maharana Ratan Singh II as a winter abode for the royal family, and is located similarly inside the majestic Chittorgarh Fort.

The base of the Reservoir, where the water from the natural spring falls in, features a Shiva Linga and an icon of Goddess Lakshmi. The holy Samadheshwara Temple is also located very close to this reservoir.

The Gaumukh Reservoir is home to a school of fishes that are almost always delighted and more than grateful for all the tourists who keep feeding them. This is one of the fun activities that can be indulged in by people who visit this place.

The tour plan of this beautiful place is almost always found along with the tour plan of the Chittorgarh Fort as a whole, and can be explored through various CHITTORGARH TOURISM PACKAGES.
