Although Rajasthan conjures up the image of a place of fortress, battle, glory, and royalty, there is a place in Chittorgarh that stands in complete contrast to all the extravagances of royalty. It is the Kumbha Shyam Temple & Meerabai Temple of Chittorgarh. Without this spot of pure divine love, your CHITTORGARH TOUR PACKAGE will remain incomplete.

Rana Kumbha, in 1448 AD, built this temple and dedicated it to Varaha. As per Hindu Mythology, Varaha is the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In addition to the main temple of Kumbha Shyam, there are two other temples- Kali Mata temple and Meerabai Temple.

Bhakti movement is now synonymous with the name Meera Bai. Chittorgarh is her birth-place. Despite being a Rajput Princess and married to a royal prince, she renounced the life of luxury. Eventually, she dedicated herself to the worship of Krishna. The legend goes that Krishna drank poison to save Meerabai from death. Hence, his body colour is blue.

The temple is a prime example of Indo-Aryan architectural style. A pyramid-like roof distinguishes the temple from others. The temple comprises pradakshinapath, ardha-mandapa, main mandapa, antarala and garbhagriha. An idol of Varaha, the third avatar of Vishnu, can be seen inside the temple. The idol has the body of a human and the head of a Varaha. The splendid sculptures of Hindu deities adorn the walls of the temple. In addition to that, you can see the statues of eight rulers inside the temple. Moreover, as a sign of reverence, a Chattri of the Kumbh Shyam Temple is dedicated to Meerabai’s guru, Swami Ravidas.

However, the Meera Mandir, situated on the same premise, is the epitome of the Nagara style of architecture. Relatively smaller than the Shyam Kumbh temple it, has an Ardha Mandapa and a small Mandapa.

Portraits of Meerabai and images of Krishna and Meerabai offering pooja to Krishna are placed on the wall of the inner sanctum. Furthermore, it is said that the markings of the footprints are that of Guru Ravidas.

No doubt, Kumbha Shyam Temple & Meerabai Temple have become one of the best tourist places to visit in Chittorgarh liked by devotees and ordinary tourists alike
