The Historical Importance of Rabdentse
Tensung Namgyal, the son of Phuntsog Namgyal, made Rabdentse the capital of the Sikkim Kingdom. He became the second King of Sikkim, known as Chogyal, in 1670. The center moved from Yuksom in 1642. Tensung Namgyal had three wives from Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim.
The king's children from each of his wives often fought with each other and did not get along. They were always trying to become the next ruler. Because of this, there were battles between the three regions. The king's children led the forces, resulting in much bloodshed and damage to property in the following years.
Ultimately, the Sikkimese army lost, and fighting continued between the Nepali and Bhutanese armies. The Nepali army won the fight and wholly destroyed the Rabdentse palace.
