In Hindu cosmic lore, Goddess Bhadrakali is one of the ten great forms of the Supreme Goddess. The Chalukyan kings built the Bhadrakali temple in Warangal, dedicating it to the goddess of anger and fury, who protects good from evil. Inscriptions inside the temple reveal that it was constructed around 625 AD.
People are interested in the beautiful temple not only for its history and magic but also for the natural beauty of its rocks and lake. As a result, it is one of the places to visit in Warangal that everyone should see. Soft breezes add to the mental peace of the area, making it a great place for tourists to enjoy the open space.
History
The Bhadrakali temple is very old. Two powers came and went, but the Islamic Sultanate made it less important than it used to be. Inscriptions on the walls reveal that King Pulakesin II of the Chalukya kingdom built the temple in 625 AD. However, much of it has since broken down. He built the building to honour that he had taken over the Vengi area of Andhra. These wins had victories marked by dedicating the temples to gods. On most occasions, Indian rulers did this to show thanks. Later, the kings of Kakatiya handled the temple and made tiny reforms.
They worshipped Kul Devi, or the ancestor god, Goddess Bhadrakali, as their family god. This made the Kakatiya kings fortify the temple's position further. They built the lake next to the Bhadrakali temple as a gift. The Hindu temple was less important when the Khiljis, Tughlaqs, and Bahamanis were in charge.
Architectural Significance
Some parts of the old structure of the Bhadrakali temple still stand, and Ganapati Shastri constructed some of it. You can tell who built it by the simple pillars and the ekanda shila (a single piece of stone used for the main deity). The Kakatiyas are responsible for the detailed carvings.
With this new form, the temple started to look and be used differently. The temple quit using animals as sacrifices and transformed the god's angry face into a smiling face with gentle eyes. It also got its own Chandi Yantra. There are holy words of amrutha beejaksharas carved into the hanging tongue of Goddess Bhadrakali.
Festivals and Celebrations at Bhadrakali Temple
The temple gets all dressed up in April or May for the Brahmotsavam events. Vasanta Navratri, Shakambari Utsavam, and Sharan Navratri are other important events for the Bhadrakali Temple. Many Warangal tour packages include visits to these celebrations.
All these activities are done during the months of Shravana Masa, between August and September. It looks very beautiful as people across Telangana and even from Andhra Pradesh come, dressed traditionally to do puja. The entire temple campus is adorned with thousands of diyas or lights. This creates an extraordinary ambiance.
