What is Warangal Famous For?

It is a historic city, and UNESCO has included it on its list of world history sites. Many kingdoms have shaped this building style, but the Kakatiyan Dynasty around the 12th century had the most impact.

The Thousand Pillar Temple, Ramappa Temple, Ghanpur Group of Temples, Fort, and Khush Mahal are some of the most interesting places to visit. The Kakatiyan Dynasty built them. People once called the city Orugallu, meaning "carved out of a single rock," because they made statues from a single rock.

Historical Significance

Warangal began as Orugallu in 1195 CE when the Kakatiya dynasty ruled and was the capital. Rani Rudrama Devi, a Kakatiya dynasty woman, ruled Telugu first. The Kakatiya monarchs left behind a castle, four massive gateways, and Shiva's Swayambhu temple. The Delhi Sultanate ruled the city for fifty years after they defeated the Kakatiyas.

It later joined the Bahmani Sultanate and Golconda Sultanate. 1687, Aurangzeb invaded Golconda, and Warangal remained under the Mughals until 1721 when it became part of Hyderabad. Warangal became the second largest state after Hyderabad after the Telangana movement on June 2, 2014.
