Delhi Overview

Is Delhi a city or state?

India's Delhi is both a city and a union territory. Its full name is the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. It is in the north-central part of India, on both sides of the Yamuna River. To the east, it borders the state of Uttar Pradesh. Both Old Delhi and New Delhi are parts of the city. Old Delhi is the old city in the north, and New Delhi is the capital of India in the south. In the early 1900s, New City was built to be the capital of British India. Since 1947, it has also been the capital of India.

Why is Delhi a union territory?

Parliament passed the Constitution of India (Seventh Amendment) Act in 1956 and implemented the States Reorganization Act of 1956. This made the city a Union Territory. The act merged Part C and Part D states into a single group of Union Territories. Many things changed when the town changed from the Chief Commissioner's Province to a Union Territory. For example, the Legislative Assembly was dissolved, and a President-appointed governor was put in charge.
