History
Vijayawada was also known as Bezawada. The city grew during the Vishnukunda era, from the 5th to the 6th century when King Madhava Varma was in charge. The town was part of the massive Kalinga Empire, which the great King Asoka took over.
In the 17th century, the city was under the rule of the Mughals. It was under the Dutch and the British. The town was a crucial part of India's fight for independence because it was the site of many Congress meetings led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Vijayawada is also important in the religious epic Mahabharata. It is thought that Lord Shiva gave the potent weapon Pashupatastra to Arjuna, one of the five Pandava brothers, there. In honour of this event, the famous temple of Vijayeswara was built.
