Kalo Dungar, also known as Kala Dungar, is a hill near Khavda in Gujarat's Kutch area. It is one of the most famous attractions in the Great Rann of Kutch and is a part of a Kutch Tour. One of the best places to visit is the Rann of Kutch.
Beyond the temple, two overlooks provide a breathtaking picture of white Rann. Due to its proximity to the Pakistani border, there is an army post at the summit of the Kalo Dungar. Only military personnel have permission beyond this point.
Before Kalo Dungar, at one point, you may notice a vehicle speeding downhill even with the ignition turned off. One can also go to India Bridge, which is around 18 kilometres away from Dungar. This bridge is not open to tourists and is patrolled by border security. However, it can be crossed on request.
Kalo Dungar history
Legend has it that Lord Dattatreya stopped here to rest and came across a bunch of starved jackals. He gave them his body to eat, and as they ate, his body regenerated itself. The monks at the temple have been preparing cooked rice for jackals who come in the late evenings for a meal for the previous four centuries.
Why is Kalo Dungar famous?
The village is the only point in Kachchh where you can get a panoramic view of the Great Rann of Kutch. A 400-year-old Dattatreya temple is also located at Kalo Dungar.
Is Dungar worth visiting?
The village, a Gujarati phrase translated to English, refers to the Black Hills, thereby remaining loyal to the enthralling vision. With Lord Dattatreya's history devoted to this location, it is bestowed with a special beauty and is a sacred shrine worth visiting. The attraction should be included in your Rann of Kutch tour package.
