Shankaracharya Temple is a very famous Hindu temple located in Jammu and Kashmir. This temple is one of the most famous holy places to visit in Srinagar. This temple is dedicated to lord Shiva. The temple's architecture is unique, and it is known by another name known as Jyesteshwara temple. Raja Gopadatya built the temple during 371 BC.

About Shankaracharya Temple
Shankaracharya temple has a total of 243 steps. You have to travel all the stairs to reach the temple. There are 23 landings also.
You can get beautiful views of the city from the famous Shankaracharya temple. The shiva linga is situated in a chamber of the temple. Four pillars support the room.
The hike to the temple is around 7 km. The time taken to do the hike is about 1 to 2 hours.

History of the temple
It is believed that the king Gopaditya gave the foot of the hill to brahmins. The Brahmins came from Aryadesha. Later the area was called Gupkar. The king Gopaditya further built a temple on the hill top. The temple was made for Shiva Jyestharuda.
