Shravanabelagola

In South India, Shravanabelagola is a very popular center for pilgrimage, especially for the Jains. The city is nearly 50 km from Hassan, and 140 kms from Bangalore. In any Chikamagalur tour package, the city of Shravanabelagola is always included.

The city contains the tallest statue carved out of a single stone of Lord Bahubali, which is 58 feet tall. The famous Gomateswara temple is situated at a height of 3347 feet, and it is located on the top of Vindhyagiri hill. There are exact 620 steps for traveling from the bottom to the top. It is one of the top places to visit in Belur.

The first Tirthankara of the Jains was Lord Adinatha. Lord Bahubali is his legendary son, who was known for his strength and kind nature. The Bahubali statue is one of the main attractions of Belur Tourism, and it was roughly built between 982 CE to 983 CE.

Shravanabelagola Jain Temple

There are two main hills located in Shravanabelagola. These are Chandragiri and Vindhyagiri. The main Gomateswara temple is situated on the Vindhyagiri. Other prominent structures include Tyagada Kamba, Odegal Basadi, Chennanna Basadi, Akhanda Bagilu, Siddhara Basadi, and so on. There are over 14 shrines in Chandragiri, and these mainly include the Chandraprabha Basadi, Chandragupta Basadi, Chamundaraya Basadi, Parshwanatha Basadi, and Kattale Basadi.

Shravanabelagola Mahamastakabhisheka

The Mahamastakabhisheka festival is celebrated in Shravanabelagola once every 12 years, and this is a major tourist attraction for people all over the country. The last Mahamastakabhisheka festival was held in February of 2018, and is scheduled again in 2030.

Other Details

Shravanabelagola is one of the major places to visit in Belur, and tourists also trek the nearby areas. For those who prefer rides, a charge of Rs.800 per head is required. The place is widely known for its outstanding symbolic representation of Jainism. The great ruler Chandragupta Maurya of the Mauryan Dynasty is said to have converted to Jainism and spent his final days in this city. Later in history, Emperor Ashoka also built many Jain structures and basadis.
