Jaigad Fort and Lighthouse

Jaigad Fort and Lighthouse Historical Significance

The Sultan of Bijapur is believed to have started and completed building Jaigad Fort in the 14th century. The city’s name comes from Jayba Mahar, who sacrificed his life to help build the fort. Kanhoji Angre, the chief leader during Shivaji Maharaja’s rule, later took over the fort. For a while, Shivaji also ran the fort before giving it to the Peshwas. The British finally took back the fort from them in 1818. The British built Jaigad Lighthouse in 1932. The lighthouse at Jaigad stands out due to its use of cast iron.
