It was well designed by Edward Lutyens and Herbert Baker. The building started in 1911 and was meant to be done in 4 years. 

However, the World War pushed the deadline back by 15 years, so it took 19 years to finish. The first Viceroy to live in this building was Lord Erwin. Initially serving as India's President was Rajendra Prasad. He moved into this building on January 26, 1950, and it was then called Rashtrapati Bhavan, which means "President's House."
