North Sikkim's Lachen town houses the peaceful Ngodub Choling Monastery, also known as Lachen Monastery. This abbey has stunning views of the mountains and rivers around it. Places to visit in Lachen include this Monastery, which is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and lush greenery.

The Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism was built in the 1800s, making it an essential part of Lachen's spiritual and cultural life ever since. The Monastery is both a place of worship and a storehouse for old Buddhist texts, artefacts, and lessons. People come to the Monastery to find peace and to learn more about Buddhist customs.

Historical and Religious Importance

Lama Karchen Dorje founded Lachen Monastery in 1858 A.D. It is commonly famous that the Lachen Monastery started as a modest home and grew. Lama Karchen Dorje was a pupil of Terdag Lingpa's teacher, Jamyang Choki Rinzing. To help the Monastery, Lama Karchen Dorje had the Chenrezig, a clay figure with 1000 hands, made. Artisans constructed it in three years before he relocated to Tibet.

A Nepalese aristocratic Lama named Gelong Gonpu visited Lachen Monastery and constructed the hut monastery in mud. All of these happened during the Tibetan Earth Dog Year. Even spent three years at the Monastery before returning to Nepal.

Lachen Monastery Architectural Highlights

The temple has bright murals, prayer wheels, and elaborate wood carvings that are typical of Tibetan buildings. Lachen tour packages often include a visit to this serene temple. Tibetan drawings called thangkas and statues of Buddha and other gods decorate the inside. The main prayer hall is the centre of the Monastery because it is so peaceful. The sound of monks singing and the movement of prayer flags create a calm atmosphere that makes it a great place to meditate and think.

Lachen Monastery Cultural Importance

The Monastery is very important for keeping the Buddhist culture and customs alive in the area. It has many celebrations and ceremonies all year long, but the Mask Dance is the most important one. As part of this lively party, monks in fancy clothes dance in symbolic ways to keep away evil spirits. Visitors to these events can see how deeply the locals are rooted in their faith.

Surrounding Scenery

Beautiful scenery surrounds the Monastery, including snow-capped Himalayan hills, lush green valleys, and fast-moving rivers. It's a great place to get away for nature fans and spiritual seekers alike, with its peaceful atmosphere and prayer flags flying in the wind.
