Gurudongmar Lake, in Sikkim, is one of the top fifteen largest lakes in the world, sitting at 17,100 feet above sea level. It is the second largest Lake in Sikkim, after Cholamu Lake, at an altitude of 18,000 feet. The beautiful scenery of the place is amazing and draws people from all over the world, making it one of the top places to visit in Lachung.

Gurudongmar Lake is very important for religious reasons. The view of Mount Siniolchu and Kanchenjunga from the Lake is stunning and memorable. People think the water from Gurudongmar Lake has healing properties, so many visitors take some home with them.

Religious and Mythological Significance

Snowy mountains surround the sacred Gurudongmar Lake, and its waters remain pure and icy. One of the origins of the Teesta River flows through Sikkim, West Bengal, and Bangladesh to the Bay of Bengal. 'Sarva Dharma Sthal' is a popular all-religion worship spot. Lachen is a charming North Sikkim village with Gurudongmar Lake. This village is a good overnight stop before seeing the gorgeous Lake. One of Sikkim's significant attractions, Gurudongmar Lake, is conveniently located near other attractions.

Gurudongmar Lake honours Guru Rinpoche and Guru Padmasambhava. Tibetan Buddhism's founder visited the Lake in the 8th century. The saint may have revered the frozen Lake on his trip back from Tibet since it signified Chhoedten Nyima, a sacred site.

However, the lake was frozen most of the year, so it could not supply drinking water. The guru helped the locals after they pleaded. The lake ice melted where he touched it. Thus, people revere the Lake and bring its water home in containers for its medicinal abilities.

When Guru Nanak traveled through the region in the fifteenth century, he also blessed Gurudongmar Lake. In this version of the tale, the people ask him to help melt the ice so they can use the water. Guru Nanak tapped a spot in the Lake with his walking stick, and that part has been snow-free ever since. He blessed the Lake and said anyone who drinks its water will become stronger and more energetic.
