An important religious place, the Kanchi Kailasanathar Temple is on the western shore of the Vedavathi River, looking east. It is in the city of Kanchipuram in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Many people visit the temple all year, but during Mahashivratri, the number of visitors goes up by a huge amount. The temple is very important to Hindus and lots of them go there. It is also one of the places to visit in Kanchipuram for those interested in history and architecture.

Historical Significance

The temple has been there since the year 705 AD. Kanchi Kailasanathar Temple is one of the oldest temples in South India. The Archaeological Survey of India is taking care of it. However, the builder of this temple is still unknown. The Pallava King Rajasimha ordered the building of the temple.

Kanchi Kailasanathar Temples have been praised by historians as models for temple building in South India. This is evident in the design of the temple which includes huge façades, grand towers and the unusual sculptures and figures.

Architectural Features

The temple is a great example of the Dravidian style of building. It features beautiful carvings and is made of sandstone. It is very different from all the other churches in Tamil Nadu in terms of how beautiful its architecture is. The main shrine features a fascinating sixteen-sided Shiva lingam made of black rock.

Specialty of Kailasanathar Temple

Over 2,000 years old, the Kailasanathar temple is known for its exquisite architecture. More interesting features of this old temple are the mythical lions in various directions, the idol of Lord Shiva playing the bizarre Veena instrument, and the narrow path that circles the shrine. It is a must-visit destination for those exploring Kanchipuram tour packages and seeking spiritual and historical experiences.

Kailasanathar Temple Festivals

The most important holidays at the Kanchi Kailasanathar temple are Thirukarthigai (November–December) when about one lakh lamps are lit inside the temple, and Maha Shivaratri (February–March). People perform poojas and practices on the monthly Pradosham and full moon days.

Best Time to Visit

In Kanchipuram, the best time to visit Kailasanathar Temple is from October to March, when it is cool and pleasant outside. Visiting the temple during these months is a nice way to enjoy its detailed carvings and rich history without having to deal with the discomfort of high heat.
