About Raj Bhavan

The summer residence of the Governor of the state of Tamil Nadu, Raj Bhavan is located in Ooty city about 4 kilometers from Ooty Railway and Bus Station. It spreads over a massive area covering 87 acres and looks grand with a cream-toned façade. The mansion is only 1 kilometer from the Botanical Garden and overlooks a lush green carpeted terrain. Visitors coming here automatically get transported back to the bygone British Raj. The main aim of building the mansion was for the Governor of erstwhile Madras to escape from its humid weather. It is one among top place to visit on a Ooty tour Packages.

Raj Bhavan history

Known previously as Government House, Raj Bhavan was constructed by the Duke of Buckingham, the then Governor of Madras in 1877 to get away from the horrid sultry weather of Madras.  Later, in 1899, Sir Arthur Havelock got a ballroom built inside the Bhavan along with an ante-room. The Bhavan got electrified in 1904. It was after British rule ended and Indian became a free nation that the name of the Government House was changed to Raj Bhavan.

The interiors of the Bhavan are grand with walls featuring portraits of Governors and their wives like George V, George Marry, Duke of Buckingham, and Queen Victoria.

The Bhavan includes a ballroom, a banquet hall, reception rooms and drawing rooms, office rooms along with 17 guest rooms, each decorated more uniquely than the other. The lush green gardens are a sight to behold and spread over an area of 9 acres. The attractive features to be seen here are a vegetable garden, a nursery; a lawn that spreads over 3 acres, two lily ponds, two greenhouses, and four rosaries.
