Along with the Chota Char Dham, the famous town of Badrinath is one of India's four main Char Dham pilgrimage locations. Situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River, it has an average elevation of 3,300 meters (10827 feet) above sea level.

This holy village has the name of the Badrinath temple, which honors Lord Vishnu, the preserver. This sacred shrine's attractiveness has drawn the hearts of many Hindu devotees, as it displays the typical wooden Garhwali architecture.

History

The Mahabharata mentions the mountains surrounding the city. It says that the Pandavas took their own lives by climbing Swargarohini. It is a peak in western Garhwal that means "Ascent to Heaven." According to local tradition, the Pandavas traveled to Swarga (heaven) via Badrinath and the village of Mana, located 4 km north of Badrinath. The epic Mahabharata is said to have been authored by the great sage Ved Vyasa in a cave in Mana.

Myths surrounding Badrinath The town has a link with two mythology. The first is that, according to the Vamana Purana, Bhakti Narada could gain salvation here after the two sages, Nar and Narayana (the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu), completed their penance. 

The legend tells of Lord Vishnu's love for a meditation site near the Alaknanda River. He incarnated as a child near Neelkanth Parvat. Goddess Parvati, in love with the child, took Lord Shiva to meet him. She gifted the site to the child, and the site is now revered as BadriVishal.
