An important museum in India, the National Museum in New Delhi is one of the biggest in the country. It is on the corner of Janpath and Maulana Azad Road. The Gwyer Committee, set up by the Indian government in 1946 and began working in 1949, made the plans for the beautiful storehouse. 

What is unique about the National Museum of Delhi?

The museum has more than 200,000 art pieces from India and other countries. It is managed by the Ministry of Culture in India. The museum displays the cultural history of many countries over 5,000 years ago, including ancient and modern art items. The National Museum Delhi is one of the top places to visit in Delhi.

What things are kept in the National Museum Delhi?

•    Things from the Harappan or Indo-Saraswati Civilization are displayed in the Harappan Gallery.

•    Maurya, Shunga and Satavahana Art Gallery are composed of things made in the style of Greece between the 4th century BC and the 1st century BC. Most of the objects are parts of old stupas. It also contains writings or pictures depicting events in the life of Buddha.

•    The Kushana Gallery comprises pieces from the 1st to 3rd century BC, illustrating the Gandhara and Mathura Schools of Art and the representation of Buddha's body.

•    The Gupta Gallery ranges from the 4th century BC to the 6th century BC with statues and religious objects. Among them are pictures of the goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, along with other gods and temples.

•    The statues included in the Medieval Gallery belong to the 7th to 13th centuries AD and originate from the Early and Late Middle Ages.

•    Decorations several hundred years old are shown in the Decorative Arts Gallery.

•    This Miniature Painting Gallery houses about 17,000 works that reached from India. Several paintings in the Mahabharata, Ramayana, Purana, Ragamala, and Baburname series are among these works.

•    The Buddhist Art Section contains many things, souvenirs, and stories about Buddha's life and times.

Why is the National Museum in Delhi famous?

The Museum has a huge collection of Indian bronzes, terracotta (2700 BC), and wood sculptures from the Mauryan period (2nd–3rd century BC). It also has items from the Vijayanagara period in South India, the Mughal period, and the Indus Valley civilization. The museum also has artefacts from the Gandhara period. It was influenced by the Greek and Gupta periods.

What is the duration of a visit to the museum?

Exploring the National Museum in Delhi would take around 2- 3 hours. If someone has a lot of interest in history, it might take longer. However, the Museum is a must-visit during the Delhi tour package.
