Animals and birds live in the Zoological Park in a setting much like their natural home. Not only does the zoo house rare species, it also helps them have babies while they're there. It also has programs to protect and breed Asian Lions, Royal Bengal Tigers, Brow Antlered Deer, Swamp Deer, Indian Rhinos, and Red Jungle Fowl. In the long run, they might do well in the wild again.

History of the Zoo

Mr. Punjab Rao Deshmukh officially opened the Park on November 1, 1959. He was a minister for the Indian government. At first, it was called Delhi Zoo. They designated it the National Zoological Park in 1982 to make it the best zoo in the country.

People all over the country could have fun at the zoo that the Indian Board for Wildlife thought should be in the country's capital. They put together an ad hoc group with some popular nature lovers from Delhi, including Indira Gandhi. The Chief Commissioner led the group. Their job was to devise a plan for creating a Zoological Park in Delhi.
