About Madikeri Fort

The Seventeenth-century fort of the spectacular city of Coorg was first established by the eminent ruler Mudduraja which counts up to a massive length of over a hundred feet. The Fort has been under several different people in its lifetime because of which the area has remains of a variety of periods in time. With its vintage feels and extensive history, the majestic Fort as it stands today is one among the rare historical sites of India and also among the best places to visit in Coorg.

Major Attractions

One of the welcoming features of the fort is the pair of elephants carved intricately in stone. A vintage tortoise carrying the ancient initials of the prominent ruler and Fort owner of the Coorg city in the 1790s, the majestic ruler named Vijayarajendra can be seen too. Eventually, it was overtaken by the Colonizers in the 1830s right after the prominent ruler, WadiyarLingarajendra the second. Another attraction here is the informative Archeological museum which features multiple artefacts and artworks like the eminent and brave K. Cariappa's lovely portrait. The Building

The mysterious passages dug up secretly within the fort area built in two huge floors is one prime feature of the fort building. Minute details can be seen carved on the palace walls and rooms within the fort. The Colonizers made their distinct additions to the premises including a big tower of a clock and a tainted glass European Church which replaced the renowned Virabhadra temple.All these distinct specifications make the building one of the prime historic structures of the nation.

Madikeri Fort history

Being the home of the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Madikeri today, the fort has come through several hands of the rule. Initially constructed as a mud structure, in the 1780s the renowned Tipu Sultan built the majestic palace in stone which lies within the premises of the royal fort. It came to be known as Jaffarabad under the Sultan. All this makes the Fort one among the magnificent places to visit in Coorg.
