History of the place

Gumbaz is a Muslim mausoleum at Srirangapatna. It is in the centre of a landscape garden. Gumbaz is located in Ganjam, Karnataka. Gumbaz has the graves Hyder Ali, and Fakr-Un-Nisa; parents of the ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan. It was built by Tipu Sultan so that his parents can be buried in it after their death. In 1799, the British allowed Tipu Sultan to be buried in it too. The Gumbaz is a very attractive place that falls under Srirangapatna Tourism.

The structure was construction had started in the year 1782 and ended in the year 1784 at Srirangapatna as a mausoleum. The mausoleum has got a big garden with different kinds of plants, flowering plants from different corners of the world. The original carved doors that were built back then is now exhibited in London in the Victoria Albert Museum. Lord Dalhousie had gifted a door decorated with ivory which is presently in the show. 

Tipu sultan burial place

In the year 1799, after the death of the Tiger of Mysore, Tipu Sultan in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war, he was buried in the main Gumbaz along with his father Hyder Ali and mother Fakr-Un-Nisa.  

Tipu sultan tomb

Tipu Sultan tomb is inside the mausoleum, the main Gumbaz that was built by him for his parent’s burial. His tomb is by his father’s and mother’s tomb. 

Gumbaz timings

The place remains open from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM for the tourists’ visit. The Gumbaz mausoleum is a very beautiful heritage spot to visit. It is among the best places to visit in Srirangapatna. The place has got the stories of early time struggle, the fights when the British invaded into Southern India. The tomb area is so peaceful. One will feel inner peace on visiting the burial.

Apart from Tipu Sultan’s parents burial, there are also burials of his family members around. The building is white in color with a circular dome at the top, which makes it more attractive. There is a guide inside who will explain in brief the story behind the build of Gumbaz and Tipu Sultan’s rule in Mysore. This is a mandatory place in the list of Srirangapatna tour package.
