Karla Caves are famous places to visit in Lonavala. They are old Buddhist rock-cut caves. There are many names for this cave shrine in India. Some of them are Karli Caves, Karle Caves, and Karla Cells. One of India's biggest Chaityas (prayer halls with stupas) is in these caves. The Ekvira Temple inside Karla Caves is what the caves are most famous for.

Ancient Buddhist Architecture

The caves have beautiful architecture, detailed carvings, enrapturing sculptures, and lovely rooms for monks. When you enter these rock-cut wonders, you'll see Grand Chaitya, a massive prayer hall. People consider it one of India's biggest rock-cut chaityas. Its tall front, covered with intricate statues and pillars, creates an air of grandeur and respect.

The Grand Chaitya, which is the main attraction at Karla Caves, is a sight that draws people in. Its tall front covered in sculptures gives off a sense of spiritual importance. Walking inside, a large hall with 37 grand pillars decorated with paintings and patterns greets you. Light and shadow play delicately with each other, creating a calm atmosphere that makes you think of good things.

Karla Caves Spiritual and Historical Significance

Karla Caves were built in two stages. The first stage was from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD, and the second stage was from the 5th century AD to the 10th century. Scholars believe that builders followed a single plan for the entire cave, except for three digs from the Mahayana phase. Traders, monks, nuns, and even the prince of a Marathi house contributed to its construction.

Writings found here mention people from various parts of the country, such as Vejamti, Sopara, Umehanakata, and Dhenukakata. The caves got their name "Veluraka" because someone named Velluraka Samgha donated land for them.

Scenic Surroundings and Trekking Opportunities

There are beautiful views of lush greenery and rocky scenery in the area around Karla Caves, making it a great place for nature fans. You can also walk to the caves; the path leading up to them is full of exciting things to do and beautiful views.

This is especially exciting to do during the monsoon season when the area is most beautiful. You walk along rough roads surrounded by thick woods, making it a must-visit spot in Lonavala tour packages.
