Poompuhar overview

The town of Poompuhar is on the coast and is in the district of Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the most important places to see on the CHIDAMBARAM TOUR PACKAGE.

The town, on the mouth of the Kaveri River, has recently started to draw tens of thousands of developed travellers. It has always been significant in Sangam literature and as a popular tourist destination in Tamil Nadu. It is fabled for being the locale for the Silapaddikaram, one of the finest epics in south India.

What is it famous?

Poompuhar is a famous weekend getaway from Chennai for people who love to see and learn about new places. It is famous for being where the Kaveri River meets the sea. The Poompuhar beach is one of the main places people see in the city.

The beach extends from the Kaveri River to Neithavasal, three kilometres away. It falls on the Bay of Bengal. Other PLACES TO VISIT IN CHIDAMBARAM include the Poompuhar Museum, the Pallavanam Shiva Temple, and the Poompuhar Lighthouse.

How was Poompuhar destroyed?

A marine archaeological study done by the National Institute of Marine Archaeology, Goa, has now shown that floods and the wear and tear of time washed away much of the town. Based on artifacts discovered during excavations, this very old city is thought to have been built long ago. Huge Tsunami waves have destroyed it more than once in the past. Oceanographers working as marine historians have found pottery from the 4th century BCE off the coast of this town.

How many years old is Poompuhar?

Poompuhar is an ancient seaport city in Tamil Nadu dating back 2,000 years. However, it was a very important place for trade and culture during the early Tamil Sangam time, and hence, there are significant historical values associated with it.

What is the other name of Poompuhar?

The city used to be a thriving old port city called Kaveri Poompattinam. It was at its best during the rule of the Chola kings. This is where the River Kaveri meets the sea. People first called the port town Puhar because it was so beautiful, and then they called it Poompuhar. Silappathikaram and Manimekalai's epics, written in Tamil, showcase many great things about the city.
