Sirkazhi was first mentioned in the history of Chola King Kocengannan. He ruled during the Sangam Age (3rd century BCE to 4th century CE) and is believed to have won a bloody battle here. The Cholas ruled this area for over four hundred years, from 850 to 1280. During their rule, they built many churches. These churches have more than 41 writings that list gifts from kings, such as land, sheep, cows, and oil.
