About Narasingam

With intricate peacock sculptures, wonderful temples within caves of Narasingam, Narasingavalli, Devasena and Muruga, the wonderful intricate temple is among the most worshipped and one of the best places to visit in Madurai and a key part of every Madurai tour package.

History

The ancient temple is believed to be formed in the 770 AD by the trusted minister of the esteemed Madurai King, Raja Paraanthaka N. The name of the minister responsible for the construction of the magnificent site is Madurakavi. Girivalam (encircling the sacred hill) is a significant event that takes place here. 

Deity

The marvelous sculpture of the renowned Yogi Narasingam Perumal is artistically carved in the ancient style prevalent in the Pandya Kingdom. The intricate carving of the idol is done out of the rocks of the Hill of Annamalai. The west of the main cave temple is another marvelous temple formed by the 8th century Pandya king. The magnificent temple within the cave worships the esteemed heavenly pair of Murugan and Devasena. What is most attractive about the physical aesthetics of the temple are the intricate sculptures in pairs of peacocks and cocks carved beautifully.
 
To the west of the ancient temple of Narasinga, another cave temple carved in the cave is situated the formation of which dates back to as early as the 8th century. It is said to be constructed under the supervision of a Pandia King. In this Madurai temple, the beloved pair of Lord Muruga and the goddess Devasena are worshipped in the cave temple. The outer wall of this magnificent temple is beautified by the sculptures of the pair of peacocks which make it a fine sight for art lovers and devotees. 

Festivals

Apart from all other attributes, the Narasimha Jayanthi and full moon days are the most celebrated days here. Abhishekam (oil bath) is a usual ritual here on special days. 

Major attractions

Another attraction associated with the site is the popularly worshipped temple of Goddess Narasingavalli which is another sacred beauty carved artistically in stone. This wonderful temple of Yoga deity Narainga Perumal is magnificently carved inside a cave with wild and raw surroundings and utmost belief of the devotees.

Visitors can enter the temple in the morning at 7.00 am. The temple remains open till 12 in the afternoon. Again, it opens at 4 pm and allows devotees inside till 8 pm.
